Vatican Museums tickets 2026: official vs resellers, combo deals & insider tips

The base ticket price is €20, but booking online through the official portal adds a mandatory, non-refundable €5 reservation fee per ticket.

Shoulders and knees must be covered for all visitors. If you wear sleeveless tops, tank tops, or short shorts, you will be denied entry or forced to buy expensive cover-ups from street vendors.

Official tickets are strictly non-refundable and non-changeable. If you miss your booked time slot, your ticket is voided and you will not receive a refund.

The direct shortcut from the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica is reserved for guided tour groups. Individual ticket holders must exit the museum, walk 20 minutes around the outer walls, and join the main security queue at St. Peter's Square.

Large bags, backpacks, and non-telescopic umbrellas must be checked for free. However, you cannot retrieve them if you exit directly toward St. Peter's Basilica, forcing a long walk back to the museum entrance.

'Skip-the-line' tickets only bypass the ticket purchase queue. All visitors must still wait in the mandatory security check line, which can take 10–20 minutes during peak hours.

The name on your ticket must exactly match your physical government-issued ID or passport. Discrepancies will result in denied entry without a refund.

The Vatican Museums are at Viale Vaticano, 00165 Rome. Bring your booking or ticket and allow time for metal-detector security checks; “skip-the-line” wording does not remove security or other access controls. Dress appropriately: sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted. Bags, luggage, rucksacks, unsuitable packages, medium or large umbrellas, tripods and similar items may need to be left in the free cloakroom. If you continue to St. Peter’s Basilica, the official guidance says not to leave baggage in the Vatican Museums cloakroom.

Official Vatican Museums admission is €20 without online booking or €25 with official online booking. Children below age 7 enter free. Reduced tickets are available for children aged 7–18 and for eligible students up to and including age 25 with valid documentation; verify the exact reduced-ticket option and proof requirements before booking. Visitors with certified invalidity of at least 67% receive free entry, and a companion may also qualify when the visitor is not self-sufficient. Disability and companion tickets cannot be booked online and are issued at the Special Permits and/or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall with appropriate documentation.
